Harvesting bananas…or not

When we first moved in, we were surprised to find a banana tree in our backyard.  In the spring we spied a bunch of green bananas.  We let them continue to grow throughout the summer and then we cut them down in September.  DSC_0011Overgrown and abnormal, Hannah awaited their ripening.

DSC_0035Oops.  Rottenness was not what we expected!  Left on the tree for too long, they grew too large and fibrous.  They smelled banana-like but had a yucky texture–only good for Hannah’s dolly picnics.  I hope that we get another chance!
